What is a labor doula?
A labor doula is trained and experienced in childbirth and provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth.
Giving birth to a baby is so much more than a physical phenomenon; it is a key life event that engages parents to undergo a transformational experience. A doula, who accompanies a woman in labor, mothers the mother and supports her emotional and physical needs throughout childbirth. A doula also provides support and suggestions for partners that can enhance their experience of birth.
A labor doula stays with the mother through her labor and delivery offering comfort and support. A doula does not replace nursing staff or midwives. She does not perform clinical or medical tasks. Doulas do not make decisions for the clients or intervene in their clinical care. However, she does work at enhancing communication between the parents and the medical professionals.
Benefits of a labor doula
Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth:
• Tends to result in shorter labors with few complications
• Reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience
• Reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction
• Reduces the request for pain medication and epidurals, as well as the incidence of cesareans
• Research shows parents who receive support can:
• Feel more secure and cared for
• Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
• Have a greater success with breastfeeding
• Have a greater self-confidence
• Have less postpartum depression
